Project "Voltigno Lands"
Tourist Destination of the Voltigno LandsThe Project
The territory identified within the project starts from the Valle del Voltigno. The area, included in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, occupies an area of 5,172 hectares and includes the Voltigno and Valle D’Angri Regional Reserve; a protected natural area of Abruzzo, established in 1989. The “Voltigno” destination extends territorially towards the Gran Sasso d’Italia area, concentrating in the Province of Pescara on the municipalities of Brittoli, Montebello di Bertona, Villa Celiera, Carpineto della Nora, Farindola and Civitella Casanova, with the addition of Penne and Loreto Aprutino which have characteristics in common and are similar. In the Province of L’Aquila it extends over the municipalities of Ofena and Villa Santa Lucia but they are outside the territory of the LAG Terre Pescaresi.
There is no official classification of the Voltgino. Starting from the perimeter traced by the legislation establishing the Reserve which united it to the Valle d’Angri, a recomposition was carried out on the basis of the tourist vocation. The marked propensity for wine and olive growing makes the territory considered fall within the Controlled Designation of Origin and Protected Designation of Origin Areas, on which there are also two thematic roads that can be exploited within the offer: the Oil Road (itinerary accredited by the Abruzzo Region) Aprutino-Pescarese and the Pescara Hills (divided into two routes) and the Wine Road (itinerary also accredited by the Abruzzo Region) of the Aprutine Hills. The local gastronomy reflects the great variety of typical products: from cured meats to cheeses (Pecorino di Farindola), from legumes to vegetables (Tondino del Tavo), from homemade pasta (Strapezzone di Farindola) to sweet specialties. Over time, some typical products have spread on a medium scale to be appreciated all over the world, as was the case for example for wine and oil; others, even without crossing national borders, have become, like the arrosticini, an icon of the Vestina area.
